On Monday, August 21, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Escambia County between 11:30 a.m.. and 3:15 p.m. (This will not effect dismissal times; elementary schools and others that normally dismiss earlier than 3:15 will dismiss as usual). During this time, the school district has said that all activities, including P.E. classes and recess, will be conducted indoors.

Teachers can take students out to see the eclipse, provided a district approved parental permission slip is signed and students are provided with certified viewing glasses. Teachers must provide safe instruction for students that will watch the eclipse. Students will be limited to 10 minutes of viewing time, unless a longer time is approved by the principal.

Students unable to go outside under the guidelines will be able to watch the eclipse online.

I think the way light bends around objects with mass (causes things like "twin stars", etc), it creates a kind of magnifying effect.

*this is just one of my many random scientific theories based on nothing, so don't quote me on this

I'm wrong:

Looking at the sun during an eclipse is more dangerous than looking at full sun. The darkness that accompanies an eclipse can override the natural tendency to squint and avert the eyes, increasing the amount of ultraviolet radiation landing on the retina and making it more likely that you'll sustain eye damage. Your eyes can sustain damage even if only a small sliver of the sun is visible. The cornea focuses sunlight on the retina and scorches it, and because the retina has no pain receptors, you don't know the damage has been done until it's too late.

When the moments of totality, it is 100% safe to look directly at the Sun and its corona with your naked eyes. If you leave your eclipse glasses on, you won't see anything at all.

Do not leave your eclipse glasses on during totality. As soon as you cannot see the Sun through your eclipse glasses, take them off. Totality is here.

During totality, it's safe to use an unfiltered telescope, pair of binoculars, or other magnifying device to view the Sun's edge and corona. If you're still looking through it the instant totality ends, even for the briefest of moments, you can blind yourself permanently.

Damn, shit got serious real quick. This makes sense and now seems familiar from when I was a kid.

(People in Central Florida are going crazy with this. Many say they will check their kids out of school and take them home to ensure they don't go outside)
