Former Florida State cornerback Malcolm Tatum, who despite his diagnosis as a paranoid schizophrenic steadfastly refused to admit he was insane when he shot a neighbor in Perrine, agreed Friday to serve a 10-year prison term.

But Tatum refused to accept a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, which would have placed him in a state hospital for the foreseeable future. In an interview with The Miami Herald in April, Tatum said he believed spirits had possessed him.

"Hospitals have the right to hold on to you as long as they want. But it's almost like probation for life," Tatum said.
