Per APStylebook, do not use dehumanizing “the” labels such as the poor, the mentally ill, the French, the disabled, the college-educated. The aforementioned groups are henceforth to be known as "people with mental illnesses".

Examples:
Like countless other people with mental illnesses, I graduated from the University of Florida.
Do you like ketchup on your people with mental illnesses fries?
This was a people with mental illnesses-ly worded tweet.
