Did they used to have it the other way around with the university names?

I don't believe so and I've never really found a great reason as to why they started doing it. Some people said it was simply because it looks better to have all the school abbreviations end in U. Also heard people mention that they thought it worked better for fight songs. Possibly the one that makes the most sense is that newspapers started doing it to avoid confusion with other schools.

I agree that the avoiding confusion thing makes the most sense, although at that point I'd try using a common abbreviation like Neb. or Okla. The nice thing about Florida is there are no other states that begin with F and FSU is pretty unambiguous.

Speaking of, the weirdest football school to me that isn't a military academy is Boston College. Boston University is actually in Boston but doesn't seem to have a football program. Boston College isn't even in Boston and it's a university.

From what I've read, Miami(FL) is talking $8 million PER YEAR for Cristobal, a coach that couldn't hack it at FIU. :biglol
