USC and UCLA are joining the Big 10 in 2024.
Texas and Oklahoma are joining the SEC in 2025.
Playoff expands to 12 teams in 2024.
This leaves the conferences with the following number of teams:
Big "10" - 16
SEC - 16
ACC - 14
PAC "12" - 10
Big "12" - 8
It seems like the next logical step would be for the PAC-12 and Big XII to merge, with two of the teams joining the ACC (Baylor and TCU? Oregon and Oregon St? Stanford and Cal?), creating four 16-team super conferences. This would put 4 conference champs and 8 wild cards in the playoffs. I think this is retarded, and a move in the wrong direction. I think we need 8 conferences with 8 teams each (restoring old rivalries like Pitt-PSU, Pitt-WVU, WVU-VT, Nebraska-Oklahoma, Arkansas-Texas, Notre Dame-Michigan, BYU-Utah, etc). Teams play 7 conference games (no championship games) and 5 OOC games. Each team gets 1 FCS opponent, 2 G5 opponents, and 2 P5 (now P8) opponents. Playoffs are all 8 conference champs, regardless of record, and 4 wild cards.
Or you could add ND, BYU and 6 other teams to make eight 9-team conferences.

6 auto bids is ridiculous IMO. We want the best teams not the highest ranked team from the AAC. It’s getting to the point they should just get rid of conferences.

Yep. It's all about the Hamiltons, baby!
Here's a conference system I came up with based on mainly geography with a few rivalry considerations. I also wanted to make sure no conference had less than 8 or more than 10 teams.

It's obviously not perfect, but I prefer true regional rivalries than bullshit like Missouri playing UF every year. There are some natural OOC rivalry games, too.

I was talking about how they are going to do it with what we currently have. Not your proposal. Yours is better than what we will have. What I read could have been bullshit but they are going to have 6 auto bids to conference champs

Not right now. Maybe later, maybe not. I'm just not a fan of the current "division" among FBS teams. There shouldn't be "power" conferences. Mix it up a little.
This eliminates the repressive social construct of "P5" and "G5" and goes back to the golden era when kids played football close to home. We could do away with the utter nonsense that is big conference networks and ESPN. Regional broadcasts over the air. Sunshine Network could be brought back. That would be great.
You don't have to have this "power" conference nonsense. You just have to win. Then you could have the X highest-ranked teams in the playoffs. Alternatively, this works well with a 32-team playoff with 15 conference champs and 17 at-larges.
It's not like P5 and G5 teams have different scholarship restrictions. That's just another way the system discriminates against "lesser" schools. This way at least the "lesser" schools have a chance at getting multiple CFP bids through increased matchups with "power" teams and conference championships.

River is the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers. Kentucky and Indiana border each other, which is weird to me.
The northeastern USA doesn't have many good CFB teams. Same in places like Wyoming and Montana (Central being vast with MN to UT). This is and the fact that Rutgers is supposedly a P5 team is why I prefer the 15-conference system.

Added Penn State (forgot about them) to the East conference so there's at least one good school in it. So the East and Desert conferences have 9 teams each.
