TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- A scratchy-voiced Nick Saban announced at his Wednesday press conference a suspension of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and number changes for three players.
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Alabama safety HaHa Clinton-Dix has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, Nick Saban said after Wednesday's practice.
Saban would not comment about what Clinton-Dix, who was seen at Wednesday's practice, did to specify the violation.

"I'm going to be consistent. When guys get suspended, I never ever say what it's for. All right?" Saban said. "So, I'm not going there, so don't ask me. It's the way it always happens. Every guy.

"If they do right, they wouldn't be getting suspended. I don't know for how long this will be, so don't ask me that either. That's the only new news we have right now."

Clinton-Dix, a third-year junior, is considered to be one of the nation's best safeties and has been projected as a potential first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. On the season, he's second on the team with 24 tackles and also has two pass deflections. He led Alabama with five interceptions during his sophomore year.

Clinton-Dix has been a beneficiary of significant praise from Saban throughout his Crimson Tide career. He was included on one of Alabama's four preseason media guide covers and he was among a small group of players who participated in live interviews with ESPN when the network was on campus in the days leading up to the Crimson Tide's trip to Texas A&M.

"He's a great player, obviously he'll be missed," defensive end Jeoffrey Pagan said. "I'm confident in the guys we have behind him and the guys in the secondary to make adjustments. I think we'll be all right."

Saban said sophomores Landon Collins and Geno Smith will fill the void during Clinton-Dix's absence. He stressed that Collins, a five-star recruit who has shined on special teams and in Alabama's dime package, really hadn't played the position until now.

Senior Nick Perry was Clinton-Dix's backup before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery.

Clinton-Dix is the fourth Alabama player to serve a Saban-announced suspension since the start of preseason camp.

Tight end Malcolm Faciane was out for 30 days at the start of camp, linebacker Trey DePriest missed a week of fall camp and Smith did not travel for the season opener. Smith, who was arrested in August for driving under the influence, practiced throughout his suspension while DePriest and Faciane did not.

He has failed multiple drug tests since the start of the season and Saban is finally punishing him because they have Georgia State and Kentucky.

Only Ha Ha and the Staff know the real reason. I have a feeling it will not become public unless its a season long suspension.
