Coaching Cullen’s baseball team.

First year coaching baseball for me, never played it except in PE. I was a dugout coach last year, for his first season and we won the championship.

So first year as head coach for me. We only have 8 players.m, and warming up before the game starts, and one of my players get busted in the face, has to leave and go get stitches. We had to forfeit, but we still played the game. We “won” it 14-2.

Felt good, wanted to brag a little about it, so I figured I’d do it here. I love coaching those kids though.

Hand across chest = steal
Hands down both forearms = hit & run
Bill of cap = take

I was like a little Jim Harbaugh as a kid. Always knew what the other team was up to. :dog

Also, I have the greatest, most unstealable set of signs ever. I can teach you. ;)

Muck, I thought being a mini Harbaugh would you crying every time you lost and calling a timeout when the game was basically over. :dog Cheating seems like more of a last resort when you can't beat Ohio State or Michigan State. Years of falling just short seemed to wear on poor little Jimmy.

Some of them do. I haven’t gotten to focus on bunting with them yet. We’ve went over how to do it, but haven’t practiced it too much. We had about 6 practices that were 2 hours each. One hour on the field and one hour in the cages. 2 of those practices were cancelled due to weather so I focused on the more important stuff with them.


We are working on using the other signs, but with these kids, they lack all the focus they need, so we are having to tell them also. Though it was our first game, and with us only having 8 players for our practices, we didn’t get any real simulation. I tried to do a scrimmage with another team. We had it scheduled and then he messaged me as r said he forgot that day was his anniversary and had to cancel the scrimmage.


We have 3 games next week, and after they get that significant game time, I’m expecting them to be more focused, and calmed down a little. Not so nervous and being able to focus on their task at hand.


I’m not hard on them, and don’t punish them for messing up. I don’t make them run for messing up or anything like that. This age group I’m focused on teaching and correcting, and making sure they are having fun, while being good respectful players.

If it’s little League. You can lead off and steal in 50/70 Division like real baseball. Not sure if you’re Little League, Babe Ruth or Pony Ball.

That’s what 50/70 was designed for. (One step closer to real baseball).

Unless your league has a local rule prohibiting it which would be gay.

Playing 50/70, it’s for the city recreation center. It’s sponsored by USSSA ball, and it has an all star travel team at the end of the season.

It’s still that way in Little League up to age 12 on the 46/60 fields. They implemented 50/70 like 10 years ago to make it more like real baseball (and compete with travel ball). Which it really doesn’t. It’s still Little League. LOL

Little League 13 and up goes to the big fields like in HS, College, Pros. 60/90

Babe Ruth plays on regulation fields and you can steal like normal

No idea what the hell rec center ball is.

Wanna have some fun.

Teach your players the “3 ball walk” trick play that’s really a steal.

Runner on first or second (or both).

Batter has a 2-0 count. (Or 2-1, doesn’t really matter as long as it’s 2 balls and less than 2 strikes). On the 3rd pitch, if it’s a ball have your batter slow trot to first like he thinks it’s ball 4. He’s gotta sell it like he really thinks it’s ball 4. This will confuse the catcher, pitcher and more than likely the fielders. At the same time the runner on first and/or second slow trot to the next base to help sell thinking it’s ball 4. By the time the umpire calls the batter back, the runner(s) are safe at the next base. Once they get half way, they take off running. Perfectly legal.

The opposing coach will be pissed. LOL

I did this about 10 times in 8 years coaching (Travel Ball). Never once failed.
