One participates in a (lame) team sport for nationalistic pride.
The other willfully participates in an organization known for murder, rape, theft, wanton destruction, and crimes against humanity.
Soldiers aren't heroes. At best they're morons with a death wish.

I think it's more that I hate the fact that people act like undrafted military grunts are heroes when they literally signed up for that crap, and the USA hasn't been seriously threatened since maybe the 1940s*, and even then it was just a distraction invasion into Alaska and a few explosions in Oregon. Nobody in active duty is "protecting our freedom."

* Unless you count the Cold War. But soldiers aren't really active in that case.

Japan successfully occupied some of the Aleutian islands in WWII and the only mainland U.S. civilian casualties were in Oregon.

Volunteering to kill or be killed in Afganistan or Iraq (especially after no W.M.D.s. were found) was just a personal decision that shouldn't be likened to heroism. It's not like Al Qaeda was going to invade U.S. soil or overthrow our government. TSA was arguably just as useful combating terrorist attacks against the United States as the troops over there, and everyone hates them.

Is that sarcasm?

No, it was a gigantic failure of a gamble by Japan to cripple the U.S. Navy. They launched a preemptive strike to take total control of the Pacific by taking out the only other major player, but several of the major U.S. ships were not there and it just set the U.S. war machine into full motion and eliminated almost all civilian resistance to enter WW2.
