He was studying them and needed them alive. I just thought the swarming was pretty cool to watch and hear.

I prefer crawling insects to flying ones. Easier to keep an eye on them.

Some of the things these colonizing insects do is amazing. During Hurricane Harvey in Texas, there were fire ants that balled up together to float so they wouldn't drown. You can also find videos of people creating aluminum casts of ant colonies. AntsCanada has lots of good videos that are generally humane and not extermination-based, although he does feed them, so there are plenty of "versus" videos.
