When Batemen leads for Wilkerson to rush with the ball against Dallas the announcer says a whatever gain for Smith.

Good question though, but the answer is "it's a movie".

He wasn't really going the wrong way completely. He started tracking his way back across the field while he did lose a few yards on it he was taking out the defenders too. They only had a few seconds left to score in the 4th and they needed to recover and score. He was running out all of their time.
