I think some of the other examples we’ve seen in the media recently of police “over-exuberance” have been borderline cases (sans the Eric Garner debacle), but this is pretty cut and dry. There is no excusing this officers behavior, and we need to be certain that the kind of people attracted to this line of work – which can be brutal, unforgiving and dehumanizing – are the right kinds to be stewards and servants of the constituency they’re sworn to protect. I think a lot of cops fit my description, but occasionally you come across the sort who are sociopathic bullies, as we have in this situation. These sorts need to be weeded out lest the mistrust between police and citizens grows to a critical point.
