NewPipe ( https://newpipe.net#download ) if you have Android, which a lot of you don't have. You're stuck with the shitty Apple apps.

It even lets you stream audio only (like free Youtube Music subscription, which is gay that anyone would pay for Youtube anyway). Can iOS even play music in the background? I think it's a new feature for them.

IHeartRadio, iTunes, and Spotify have all been background music players for years on the iPhone. Not bragging as I don’t care about any one brand and this one iPhone is 5-6 years old. Just answering your question about the background player

I don't really understand their ad strategy. >95% of the ads I see are for things I've already bought or decided not to buy.

If you don't want/can't do an app, you can use an instance of Invidious to avoid ads, but it's simply a front-end site, not an app, so things like streaming music in the background can be a bit more complicated.
