Colin Kaepernick GTFO with your oppression bullshit!

Postby FSUKW » August 27th, 2016, 3:35 pm

I hope all his sponsors drop him.

Spoiler:
SANTA CLARA, Ca. -- Forty Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick has willingly and knowingly immersed himself into controversy by refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem in protest of what he deems are wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States.

His latest refusal to stand for the anthem -- he has done this in at least one other preseason game -- came before the 49ers preseason loss to Green Bay at Levi's Stadium.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game against Green Bay. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

The 49ers issued this statement: "The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem."

By taking a stand for civil rights, Kaepernick, 28, joins other athletes, like the NBA's Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony and several WNBA players in using their platform and status to raise awareness to issues affecting minorities in the U.S.

However, refusal to support the American flag as a means to take a stand has brought incredible backlash before and likely will in this instance. The NBA's Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf of the Denver Nuggets, formerly Chris Jackson before converting to Islam, refused to acknowledge the flag in protest, citing similar reasons as Kaepernick and saying that it conflicted with some of his Islamic beliefs.

Abdul-Rauf drew the ire of fans and was briefly suspended by the NBA before a compromise was worked out between the league and player, who eventually stood with his teammates and coaches at the playing of the national anthem.

Kaepernick said that he is aware of what he is doing and that he knows it will not sit well with a lot of people, including the 49ers. He said that he did not inform the club or anyone affiliated with the team of his intentions to protest the national anthem.

"This is not something that I am going to run by anybody," he said. "I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. ... If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right."

Kaepernick said that he has thought about going public with his feelings for a while but that "I felt that I needed to understand the situation better."

He said that he has discussed his feelings with his family and, after months of witnessing some of the civil unrest in the U.S., decided to be more active and involved in rights for black people. Kaepernick, who is biracial, was adopted and raised by white parents and siblings.

Kaepernick's Twitter feed is filled with civil rights Tweets and messages.

The former Super Bowl starting quarterback's decision to go public comes while he is fighting for his football life with the 49ers, who drafted him in the second round in 2011. He lost his starting job last season after being one of the most promising players in the NFL during his run under former coach Jim Harbaugh.

Over the past few months, his relationship with management has turned sour. He requested a trade last spring, which never came to fruition. He also has spent most of the offseason rehabilitating from operations to his left (non-throwing) shoulder, his hand and knee. That left him unable to fully compete with Blaine Gabbert for months and now, just weeks before the regular season starts, has him seemingly in a bind to regain his starting job.

He made his preseason debut against the Packers and played for the second quarter, completing two of six passes for 14 yards. He looked as rusty as you'd expect from someone who has not played since last November.

Following the game and without any knowledge of Kaepernick's non-football behavior, coach Chip Kelly said that there has never been any discussion about cutting Kaepernick.

:ROFL

Karma, bitch!

If Colin Kaepernick ends up getting released by the San Francisco 49ers, he may have an incredibly difficult time finding work elsewhere.

Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report spoke with seven anonymous NFL executives, and the consensus among all of them is that their teams would never sign Kaepernick in the wake of his national anthem protest.

“I don’t want him anywhere near my team,” one front office executive said. “He’s a traitor.”

“He has no respect for our country,” another exec told Freeman. “(Expletive) that guy.”

Each of the seven execs said he believes Kaepernick will never play in the NFL again if and when the 49ers cut the 28-year-old. Taking it a step further, one team official told Freeman he believes 90 to 95 percent of NFL front offices have blacklisted Kaepernick. That same exec said he cannot remember this much “collective dislike” for a player since Rae Carruth, who was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Carruth’s story, the former star wide receiver remains in jail after he was convicted of devising a plan to murder his pregnant girlfriend.

That seems a bit harsh. Many people feel Kaepernick’s decision to protest the national anthem is disrespectful, but he certainly doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Carruth.

In any event, Kaepernick’s poor performance on the field last season, his injury history and the current controversy surrounding him will likely turn teams off. If the majority of the league feels as strongly as the executives Freeman interviewed — or this former NFL quarterback, for that matter — Kaepernick’s pro football days could be numbered.

I doubt he was ever going to play again anyway.

Now he can blame him not getting to play his national anthem stunt. See he's being oppressed? Self fulfilling prophecy ftw!

The truth is his QB rating is shit and no one (other than Chip Kelly) would use him as a QB in the NFL.

All this time I thought he was Hispanic. He must be conflicted, his white half has oppressed his black half. If he doesn't donate to the cause maybe he can spend his $60M on therapy? :dunno

Tonight should be interesting.... :thought

Let's see what this douchebag does.

"With the San Francisco 49ers quarterback expected to be on the field for pregame festivities before the final preseason game against the Chargers at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium, Navy officers will perform the national anthem pregame while over 240 military personnel unfurl a "U.S. Super Flag.”

Spoiler:
Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand for the national anthem could grow even more tense Thursday night.

With the San Francisco 49ers quarterback expected to be on the field for pregame festivities before the final preseason game against the Chargers at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium, Navy officers will perform the national anthem pregame while over 240 military personnel unfurl a "U.S. Super Flag.”

The scheduled event is part of the Chargers’ 28th annual Salute to the Military, which was planned before Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem before last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Kaepernick, who is expected to start, has clarified that he is protesting the oppression of African Americans and police brutality but has expressed support for servicemen. But Robert Muth, chair of the San Diego Veterans Coalition, said the 49ers quarterback should not expect a chorus of cheers before the game.

“I would not be surprised if there were some boo birds out when he’s announced,’’ Muth told USA TODAY Sports. “Most people here do have a connection to the military, whether if they served themselves or have close friends or family who have served. Issues like this are always going to be front and center.”

The issue of Kaepernick’s social activism is front and center this week in the sports world — and beyond. Although most people were unaware of the quarterback’s actions until the day after Friday’s 49ers-Packers game, this week he figures to be closely watched during the national anthem — with his actions juxatosed against the sight of the huge American flag and active duty military personnel.

There will be no additional security at the stadium according to Chargers spokesman Bill Johnston. Spokesmen for the NFL, 49ers and San Diego Police Department declined to answer questions about security for Kaepernick.

Shawn VanDiver, who spent 12 years in the Navy and remains active in the San Diego military community, said he will not be among those booing Kaepernick.

“I hope that he gets a wonderful reception,’’ VanDiver said. “I and other veterans fought so he can have his free speech rights, so that all Americans can have their free speech rights, their freedom to protest.

“It just seems silly to me that we’re talking about a dude exercising his free speech rights, especially when it’s very clear we do have a problem in our country with police killing black Americans.’’

VanDiver also is among those aware of the comments the 49ers quarterback made about the military.

"I have great respect for the men and women that have fought for this country," Kaepernick told reporters Sunday in the 49ers locker room. "I have family, I have friends that have gone and fought for this country. And they fight for freedom. They fight for the people. They fight for liberty and justice for everyone.

“That's not happening. People are dying in vain because this country isn't holding their end of the bargain up as far as giving freedom and justice, liberty to everyone. …

"I've seen videos, I've seen circumstances where men and women that have been in the military have come back and been treated unjustly by the country they have fought for and have been murdered by the country they fought for, on our land. That's not right."

But the Chargers have planned a very different way to acknowledge veterans.

At halftime, the team will recognize six Vietnam veterans as a remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the war. Wounded warriors will be among the special guests when a fireworks show wraps up halftime festivities. And at the start of the third quarter, petty officer first class Steven Powell will perform God Bless America.

Maurice Wilson, a retired chief petty officer in San Diego, said he hopes the town shows respect for Kaepernick’s First Amendment rights.

“If he were criticizing the military directly, I could see a huge conflict there,’’ said Wilson, president and executive director of the National Veterans Transition Services, Inc. “But at the same time, it would be somewhat hypocritical for me to tell him, ‘Now I fought for you, but you can only use this and you can’t say that and you can’t do this and you can’t do that.’

“It doesn’t mean that I appreciate it. It doesn’t mean that I agree with him. But I just don’t think it’s significant enough for me to get up and start booing him because he’s exercising his rights like that.’’

When asked what he expects from the crowd at Qualcomm Thursday night, Wilson predicted half the fans will support Kaepernick.

“There will be some people that will probably boo, that will be mad and be angry because that’s just the way the population is,’’ he said. “At the end of the day, everybody’s there for the game more so than the politics, if you will.’’
